THEMES OF THE SYMPOSIUM

THEME 1

The Production, Transformation, Transition and Implementation of Knowledge in Design Education

The social changes due the age of information and communication lead changes in the way of life and along education systems. The conventional education models may lack adequacy in terms of today’s needs and requirements; hence the constitution of new educational paradigms becomes inevitable. The common new paradigm in education, is constituted not only over the interchange of knowledge but over the production of it. The production, transformation, transition and implementation of knowledge in design education can be considered as the fundamental problems of design education. Within this context, the inquiry for new models and approaches as well as methods and actions related to the concept of design and its education has become even more important. In the programmed symposium, it is aimed to assess the fundamentals of design knowledge, the constituents of design education from part to whole, the operational mechanisms behind design studios and related practices etc. by re-evaluating the basic problems with a constructive approach.

THEME 2

Energy and Waste Management

When analysed globally, the climate change, created and activated by the effect of greenhouse gas emissions, is one of the most fundamental problems facing the world in the 21st Century. Within this increase in greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide is seen as one of the priority gases. To overcome this problem, it is aimed to develop and design “net-zero” energy buildings by benefitting from natural resources such as sun and wind, together with reducing fossil-based energy use. To implement “renewable” (endless) energy sources, which are also known as “zero carbon,” technologies like wind turbines, photovoltaic (PV), small scale hydroelectrical, biomass boilers and such are used. It is possible to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption by implementing such technologies in buildings, besides the possibility of producing heat and energy. It is also possible to lessen the carbon emissions and heat losses than the usual by upgrading the thermal qualities and material properties of structural systems. All these approaches need to be parallel and co-ordinated with similar arrangements within indoors. Conscious approaches and measures to optimize energy use offer an effective layout for the space organization and at the same time a more sensitive life to environmental issues. In our symposium, theoretical and practical suggestions in Design Education on the content and scope of energy and its presence in education programs will be developed. Analysis and discussions on existing examples will also be made.

  • Zero-energy buildings, renewable energy and recyclable design principles in PhD studies

THEME 3

1/1 Implementations in Design Education

Some of the actions put forward in the field of interior architecture are theoretical, and some are practical or practice-based. Therefore, when it is considered in this framework, it is foreseen that the scope of design education should be in this context, and even wider. Education can be reinforced by the provision of this dual balance; the information provided in this direction will be highly appreciated in practice. The third theme of the symposium, '1/1', takes its name from the principles of examination, analysis and implementation at the production detail scale. The scale of 1/1 is the last step of the design’s realization process and is the keystone of the designed object and the space. It is for this reason that cases, problems and proposals towards implementation are also planned to be processed in the symposium.
